Virtual Credit Card: How It Works, and a Card That Spends Only Your Balance

Virtual Credit Card: How It Works, and a Card That Spends Only Your Balance

"Virtual credit card" is one of the most searched card terms, and the results mix very different things: virtual numbers from your bank's credit card, business cards with a spending limit, cards that spend your own money, and "free instant approval" offers that are not what they seem. This guide explains what a virtual credit card really is, how it works, how to get one, what "free" and "instant approval" usually mean, and how a balance-funded card like ZikCards compares.

What is a virtual credit card?

A virtual credit card is a card number with no plastic that spends borrowed money: a credit line from a bank or card issuer, which you repay later. It has a number, an expiry date and a security code, and you use it online, in apps, and sometimes in shops through a phone wallet.

People usually mean one of these:

  • A virtual number on your existing credit card. Some banks let you create extra card numbers that charge your normal credit card account. Some can be locked to one merchant or used once.
  • A digital-first credit card. Some issuers show the card in their app as soon as you are approved, before any plastic arrives.
  • Business virtual cards on a credit line. Companies get a credit limit and create cards for teams, suppliers or subscriptions, and pay the bill monthly.

In all three, the bank lends you the money first. That is what makes it a credit card.

How a virtual credit card works

  1. You apply to a bank or card issuer. It checks your identity, income and usually your credit history.
  2. You get a credit limit, the most you can spend before you pay back.
  3. You spend with the virtual card number. Each purchase adds to what you owe.
  4. You get a bill, usually monthly. Pay it in full and there is often no interest. Pay part of it, or late, and interest and fees are added.

Credit cards also bring things a balance-funded card does not: building a credit history, purchase protection in some countries, and the option to pay later. They also bring risks: debt, interest and a credit check that many people outside the issuer's country cannot pass.

How to get a virtual credit card

  • If you already have a credit card, check your bank's app for "virtual card" or "virtual number". Many banks offer it free.
  • If you don't, you apply for a credit card first. Issuers usually want you to live in their country, have a local address and income, and pass a credit check.
  • For a business, business card providers set a credit limit based on the company's finances, often with a minimum revenue or a local company registration.

For many freelancers, advertisers and small businesses outside the US, this is where it stops: they cannot get a US credit card, and their local card is refused by US platforms because of its country. That is usually the problem they are trying to solve when they search for a virtual credit card.

"Free" and "instant approval" virtual credit cards: what's real

  • Free: a virtual number on a credit card you already have is often free. A new credit card may have no annual fee, but it costs interest if you carry a balance.
  • Instant approval: real credit needs a credit decision. Some issuers decide in minutes, but only after a check. An offer of credit with no check at all is a warning sign.
  • "No credit check" cards are almost always prepaid or balance-funded cards, which spend your own money. That can be exactly what you need, but it is not credit.
  • Card number "generators" produce numbers that pass a format check and cannot pay for anything. They exist for developers testing payment forms. See our list of test card numbers.

How a ZikCards card compares

ZikCards issues US Visa and Mastercard virtual cards for people and businesses in the US and almost every other country. They are not credit cards in the borrowing sense, and this is exactly how they work:

  • A US credit BIN, loaded from your balance, no credit line. A BIN lookup on the card shows "credit", country USA, because that is how the issuer registered the card range. But no credit is given: the card spends only what you load onto it. No bill, no interest, no credit check. Read what a BIN number is.
  • Funded with stablecoins. You add USDT or USDC to your balance, then load a card. Deposits cost from $1 + 1%, depending on the network. No bank account is needed.
  • Ready in seconds after a one-time check with a photo ID and a short selfie. Choose Visa or Mastercard each time: a virtual Visa card or a virtual Mastercard.
  • A US billing address on each card (virtual card with a US billing address), and 3D Secure (3D Secure virtual card).
  • Published fees: $5 per card once, 3% to load, no monthly card fee. $1.20 stays on each open card and comes back when you close it, so load the price plus $1.20.

A US card removes the most common reason cards from many countries are refused, the card's country. Each merchant still runs its own checks, so no card provider can promise acceptance. More on this in our guide to the US-issued virtual card.

Frequently asked questions

What is a virtual credit card?

A card number with no plastic that spends a credit line from a bank, which you repay later. It is used like any card online.

Can I get a virtual credit card without a credit check?

Real credit almost always needs a check. Cards offered with no credit check are usually prepaid or balance-funded, which spend your own money. ZikCards cards are balance-funded: no credit check, no credit line.

Is there a free virtual credit card?

A virtual number on a credit card you already have is often free from your bank. A ZikCards card is not free: $5 per card once and 3% to load, with no monthly fee.

Is a ZikCards card a credit card?

No. It is issued on a US credit BIN, so a BIN lookup shows "credit", but it is loaded from your balance and spends only what is on it, with no bill and no interest.

Can I get a US virtual credit card from outside the US?

A US credit card usually needs US residence and a US credit history. A US-issued, balance-funded card is available from the US and almost every other country.

Is a virtual card safer than a plastic card?

Often, yes, for paying online. A virtual card can be created for one shop, one subscription or one ad account, so a leak or an unwanted renewal touches only that card. You can freeze it or close it in seconds, without waiting for a new plastic card. On a balance-funded card like ZikCards, a merchant can never take more than what is loaded on the card, and closing the card returns the rest of its balance to your wallet. When a merchant runs a 3D Secure check, it may ask for a one-time code, which adds a second step a thief does not have.

Are card number generators real cards?

No. Generated numbers only pass a format check. They cannot pay for anything and are meant for testing payment forms.
