You add an item to your cart on Amazon, press "Place your order", and see "Your payment method was declined" or "There was a problem with your payment". A day later an email says "Payment revision needed". The same thing can happen on AliExpress, eBay, Temu and Shein. Big online shops run their own checks on top of your bank's checks, and their messages mean slightly different things. This guide explains what each shop's message usually means and how to fix an Amazon or AliExpress card decline without making it worse.
First: is it the shop or the card?
A declined payment at a big shop has two possible sources. Either the card issuer said no (not enough money, a limit, a fraud rule), or the shop's own fraud system refused the order before or after asking the issuer. The shop rarely tells you which one. If you want the general causes of a decline at any merchant, such as limits, switched-off online payments or wrong card details, read our guide to why a card is declined online. This page covers only what is different at Amazon and the other large marketplaces.
A quick test: look at your card's transaction list. If you see a declined attempt there, the issuer refused it, and the reason is usually money, limits or a security check. If you see nothing at all, the shop probably stopped the order itself, and you need to fix something on the shop's side, such as the address or the account.
What Amazon and other shops' messages usually mean

| Message | Where you see it | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| "Your payment method was declined" | Amazon checkout | The card issuer or Amazon's checks refused the charge. Often a billing address mismatch, too little balance, or a new card on a new account. |
| "Payment revision needed" | Amazon email or "Your orders" | The order was placed, but the charge failed when Amazon tried to take payment later. The order is on hold until you update the payment. |
| "Verify your card" / "Verify your payment information" | Amazon, eBay | The shop wants you to re-enter the card number or complete a security check before it trusts the card. |
| "Insufficient funds" | Any shop | The amount, plus any hold, fee or currency difference, was more than the money available on the card. |
| "Payment failed" / "Card declined, try another card" | AliExpress, Temu, Shein | A general refusal. On AliExpress it can also mean the shop's risk system flagged the order or the account. |
Amazon card declined: the "payment revision needed" case
Amazon usually does not charge your card the moment you place an order. It may place a small or full temporary hold, and then take the payment when the item ships. If the charge fails at that point, you get the "payment revision needed" email, often days after you ordered.
This is why a card that worked at checkout can still fail later. Common reasons:
- The balance dropped between ordering and shipping, because you spent from the card elsewhere.
- The order was split into several shipments, and each one is charged separately.
- The price changed slightly, for example tax or shipping was recalculated.
- The card was frozen or closed after you ordered.
To fix it, open "Your orders" on Amazon, find the order marked for payment revision, and either confirm the same card after adding money to it, or choose another payment method. Amazon usually gives you a limited number of days before it may cancel the order, so do it soon.
Amazon card insufficient funds, when the money looks enough
"Insufficient funds" on Amazon is confusing when the card shows enough money. Usually one of these is the reason:
- A temporary authorisation hold. Shops sometimes place a hold first and then charge. If an earlier attempt left a hold, that money is not available until the hold drops off, which can take several days.
- Several orders at once. Two orders placed close together can both try to take money from the same balance.
- Currency difference. If the shop charges in another currency, the amount in dollars may be a little higher than you expected.
- Money that cannot be spent. On a ZikCards card, $1.20 stays on each open card while it is open, so what you can spend is the card balance minus $1.20.
A simple rule: load enough to cover the order total, plus a small margin for tax, shipping and any currency difference, plus the $1.20 that stays on the card. Check the order total on the final checkout page, not the price on the product page.
Shipping address vs billing address
Big shops use two addresses, and mixing them up is one of the most common reasons for a decline.

- Shipping address is where the parcel goes. It can be your home, your office, or a parcel forwarder.
- Billing address is the address linked to the card. The shop may check it against the issuer's records.
Each ZikCards card has its own billing address. You find it on the card page, with a copy button. Enter that address as the billing address in your Amazon or AliExpress payment settings, not your home address. Your shipping address stays your own. See what billing address to use at checkout.
Gift cards and digital orders
Gift cards, top-ups and digital codes are favourite targets for fraudsters, because they can be resold fast. So shops often check these orders more strictly than a normal parcel:
- Amazon may hold or cancel a gift card order from a new account or a newly added card, and may ask you to verify.
- Some shops limit how much you can buy in gift cards per day or per account.
On ZikCards cards, stored value cards and money orders are one of six blocked merchant groups. The block works by the type of merchant, not by the item, so if the seller is classed in that group, the card declines the payment whatever your balance. See which purchases are blocked. A decline in a blocked group is free, and your card activity shows that the group is blocked, so there is no point retrying.
Currency: Amazon Currency Converter or paying in USD
On some Amazon sites, if your card is in a different currency from the site, Amazon may offer to charge you in your card's currency using the Amazon Currency Converter. On AliExpress you can often choose the display and payment currency yourself.
The choice matters for two reasons:
- The rate. A shop's conversion rate may include a markup. The card network's rate may be closer to the market rate, or may not. Compare the two before you choose.
- Where the payment settles. ZikCards cards are US dollar cards. When a purchase settles with a merchant outside the US, the card issuer adds a cross-border fee of $0.50 + 2.5%.
If you shop on a US site such as amazon.com and pay in USD, there is no currency conversion. On a non-US Amazon site or on AliExpress, expect the total in dollars to differ a little from the price shown, and load a small margin for it.
AliExpress card declined, and eBay, Temu and Shein
AliExpress, Temu and Shein are large cross-border marketplaces. They usually run strict risk checks on new accounts, new cards and large first orders. Common fixes:
- Start with a small order on a new account, rather than a large one.
- Complete any security check. If a 3D Secure check appears, it may ask for a one-time code. On ZikCards, that code appears as a banner at the top of your dashboard. Read more in our 3D Secure guide.
- Do not switch cards many times in one session. Adding and removing several cards quickly can make the account itself look risky.
eBay mostly takes payments through its own checkout, and a decline there usually follows the same causes: balance, billing address and verification. If one brand keeps failing at a shop, some users try the other network. Our guide to Visa vs Mastercard virtual cards explains the difference. But no card provider can promise acceptance at any shop. Each shop runs its own checks.
Stop retrying: why it costs you
When a payment fails, the natural reaction is to press "pay" again. Do not do this more than once or twice.
- Repeated failures look like card testing, a common fraud pattern. The shop may then block the card or even the account for a while.
- On a ZikCards card, the card issuer charges $0.40 for every declined payment, taken from the card. Retries count, and attempts on a frozen card count too.
- Each failed attempt may leave a temporary hold that makes your balance look lower.
Instead, find the cause first: check the balance and the $1.20, check the billing address, look for a security check, then try once more. More help: what to do if your virtual card is declined.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Amazon say "your payment method was declined" when I have money?
Usually because of something other than the balance: a billing address that does not match the card, a temporary hold from an earlier attempt, or Amazon's own checks on a new card. Check the billing address first, then the available balance.
What does "payment revision needed" mean on Amazon?
The order was placed, but the charge failed when Amazon tried to take the payment, often when the item was about to ship. Go to "Your orders", add money to the card or choose another payment method, and confirm. Do it soon, because Amazon may cancel the order after some days.
Why does Amazon say insufficient funds on my card?
The total, plus any hold, tax, shipping or currency difference, was more than the money available. On a ZikCards card, remember that $1.20 stays on the card while it is open and cannot be spent.
Why is my card declined on AliExpress?
AliExpress may refuse a payment because of its risk checks on new accounts and new cards, an unfinished security check, or a billing address mismatch. Try a smaller first order, complete any check, and avoid many quick retries.
Which address should I use on Amazon with a virtual card?
Use the card's own billing address, shown on your ZikCards card page, as the billing address. Your shipping address can be wherever you want the parcel delivered.
Will a ZikCards card work on Amazon?
It is a US Visa or Mastercard virtual card, which removes the card's country as a reason for refusal. But each shop runs its own checks, so no card provider can promise acceptance. New to virtual cards? Start with what a virtual card is.
