Looking for a credit card without an SSN? Most US credit and debit cards ask for a Social Security number, or an ITIN, because the issuer runs a credit check or a US identity check that needs one. If you have neither, there is a simpler route for paying online: a US-issued virtual card that you verify with a passport, national ID card or driving licence. This guide explains why cards ask for an SSN, what your options are without one, and how to get a virtual card with just your ID.
Can you get a credit card without an SSN?
You can get a card to pay with without an SSN, but usually not a traditional credit card. A credit card lends you money, so the issuer checks your US credit history, and in the US that history is tied to an SSN or an ITIN. Without either, most applications stop at the first form.
What most people searching for a credit card without an SSN actually need is a card that works online: for subscriptions, apps, software, ads and online shops. For that, you do not need credit at all. You need a card that a merchant will take, in your own name, that you can load and use straight away.
That is what a virtual card is. ZikCards issues US-issued Visa and Mastercard virtual cards, funded with USDT or USDC. Our cards are on a US credit BIN, loaded from your balance, with no credit line: there is no credit check, no bill and no interest, and the card spends only what you put on it. There is no SSN field anywhere in the sign-up.
Why US cards ask for an SSN
US banks and card issuers ask for an SSN for two reasons: to check your credit and to confirm who you are under US identity rules. Knowing which one applies tells you which kind of card you can get instead.
- Credit checks. A credit card is a loan. The issuer looks up your credit report, and US credit bureaus file reports under an SSN. No SSN usually means no report, and no report usually means no approval.
- Identity checks. Even a debit card is tied to a bank account, and US banks must confirm the identity of every customer. Many do it with an SSN, some accept an ITIN, and fewer accept a foreign passport.
- Tax reporting. An account that can earn interest needs a taxpayer number, so a bank account often asks for an SSN or ITIN even when no credit is involved.
A virtual card loaded from your own balance removes the first and third reasons: nothing is lent and nothing earns interest. What stays is the identity check, and that can be done with a photo ID and a selfie.
Your options without an SSN
Without an SSN you have four realistic options for a card, and they differ mainly in what they ask for and how long they take.

| Option | What you need | Good for | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit card with an ITIN | An ITIN from the IRS, a US address, often US income | Building US credit | Getting an ITIN takes weeks; only some issuers accept it |
| Secured credit card | A deposit, and usually an SSN or ITIN | Starting a US credit history | Still needs a US taxpayer number at most banks |
| A card from a bank in your country | Local ID and a local account | Everyday local spending | Often refused by US and international sites |
| A US virtual card (ZikCards) | A photo ID and a selfie, plus USDT or USDC | Paying online and in apps | Builds no credit history; no cash withdrawals |
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is applied for from the IRS with Form W-7. If your goal is a US credit score, the ITIN route is the one that builds it, and it is worth the wait. If your goal is to pay for things online this week, a virtual card gets you there in minutes.
How a virtual card without an SSN works
A virtual card is a real Visa or Mastercard number, expiry date and security code, without the plastic. You use it wherever a card is taken online, and you can add it to Apple Pay or Google Pay to pay in shops.
With ZikCards, three things replace the SSN and the credit check:
- Your ID. You verify once with a passport, national ID card or driving licence and a short selfie on your phone. Most checks are approved automatically within minutes. See what ID you need.
- Your balance. You add money with USDT or USDC, the two biggest dollar stablecoins. No bank account is needed; our guide to a virtual card without a bank account explains that side.
- A card loaded from that balance. You choose how much goes onto each card. The card cannot spend more than that, so there is nothing to check and nothing to pay back.
The card is issued in the US by our card-issuing partner, so it carries a US card number and, on cards that have one, a US billing address shown on the card page. You can read more about what that means in our guide to a US-issued virtual card.
How to get a virtual card without an SSN
Getting a ZikCards virtual card without an SSN takes about 5 minutes for the first card, in four steps.
- Create your account at ZikCards with your email address. You need to be 18 or over.
- Verify your identity with your photo ID and a selfie. No SSN, ITIN or US address is asked for.
- Add money with USDT or USDC. The deposit fee is from $1 + 1%, and the smallest deposit is $20. New to crypto? See how to buy USDT, and always send on the network you chose on the deposit page.
- Create your card on the Issue card page: pick a virtual Visa card or a virtual Mastercard and how much to load. The number, expiry and security code appear on the card page in seconds.
Then pay with it like any card: our guide on how to use a virtual card walks through the checkout, the billing address and the one-time codes some payments ask for.
Who can sign up: people in the US and almost every other country. Restricted countries apply to their residents and nationals; the list is on our restricted countries page, and our help answer covers whether ZikCards is available in your country.
What you can pay for with it
A virtual card without an SSN pays for the same things online as any Visa or Mastercard: subscriptions, software, AI tools, ads, apps and online shops, wherever the card is accepted.
- Subscriptions and apps. Save the card once in the service's payment settings. See a virtual card for subscriptions.
- AI tools. ZikCards cards work with ChatGPT; see a virtual card for ChatGPT and AI tools.
- Ads. They work with Google Ads and Facebook Ads too: see a virtual card for Google Ads and a virtual card for Facebook ads.
- PayPal. Add the card to your own PayPal account; see a virtual card for PayPal.
Each platform still runs its own checks on your account, so no card provider can promise acceptance. A US card removes one common reason a card is refused, the card's country, but not every reason.
What it cannot do
A virtual card without an SSN is a way to pay, not a way to borrow, so a few things a credit card does are not part of it.
- No credit history. Nothing is lent, so nothing is reported to credit bureaus. If you need a US credit score, look at the ITIN route above.
- No credit line. The card spends only what is on it. Load it before a large purchase.
- No cash. There is no PIN and no ATM withdrawal.
- Some kinds of purchase are blocked. Our help answer lists which purchases are blocked.
Money is never stuck on a card: closing a card is free and returns its balance to your ZikCards balance.
What it costs
ZikCards cards cost $5 to create, with no monthly fee. Moving money from your balance onto a card costs 3%, and top-ups under $100 also carry $1. Each open card keeps $1 that cannot be spent while it is open, and you get it back when you close the card.
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Card creation, one time | $5 |
| Monthly fee | None |
| Deposit to your balance | From $1 + 1% |
| Loading a card | 3% (plus $1 on top-ups under $100) |
| Closing a card | Free |
Purchases that settle outside the US carry the issuer's cross-border fee, shown in each card's Fees before you create it. Every fee is on our pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a credit card without an SSN?
Usually not a traditional US credit card, because the issuer needs an SSN or ITIN for its credit check. You can get a virtual card to pay online without one: ZikCards verifies you with a photo ID and a selfie, and the card is loaded from your balance, with no credit line.
Can I get a debit card without an SSN?
A debit card from a US bank often needs an SSN or ITIN for the bank account behind it. A ZikCards virtual card needs no bank account and no SSN: you add USDT or USDC to your balance and load the card from it.
Is a virtual card without an SSN a real Visa or Mastercard?
Yes. It has a real Visa or Mastercard number, expiry date and security code, issued in the US, and it is used like any other card online. A BIN check shows a US card.
Does it build my credit score?
No. Nothing is borrowed, so nothing is reported to credit bureaus. If building US credit is your goal, an ITIN and a secured credit card are the usual route.
I live in the US but have no SSN. Can I sign up?
Yes. ZikCards serves people in the US and almost every other country, and the sign-up asks for a photo ID and a selfie, not an SSN. Restricted countries apply to their residents and nationals.
I am an international student without an SSN. What can I use?
For paying online now, a virtual card verified with your passport works without an SSN or a US bank account. For building US credit while you study, ask your bank about an ITIN or a secured card; some issuers consider applications without an SSN.
What ID do I need?
A passport, national ID card or driving licence, and a short selfie on your phone. Most checks are approved automatically within minutes.
