Virtual Card for International Payments: Pay Merchants Abroad in Dollars

Virtual Card for International Payments: Pay Merchants Abroad in Dollars

A virtual card for international payments is a card you use online to pay merchants in other countries, usually in US dollars: software, ad platforms, online shops, hosting and subscriptions. Many people need one because their local card is declined abroad, charges a conversion fee on every dollar payment, or is blocked for foreign online purchases. This guide explains why international card payments fail, what a virtual card for international payments needs, what it really costs, and how to set one up with ZikCards.

Why international card payments fail

Most failed international payments come from the card, not the merchant. The usual reasons:

  • Foreign or online payments are switched off. Many banks block them by default, or allow them only after you turn them on in the app.
  • Limits. A daily or per-payment limit for foreign transactions is reached, or a yearly foreign-currency allowance runs out.
  • Currency. A local-currency card paying in dollars goes through a conversion, often with a fee and a worse exchange rate, and some banks refuse the conversion outright.
  • The card's country. Some merchants and platforms are more cautious with cards issued in certain countries.
  • Fraud checks. A first payment to a foreign merchant often looks unusual to the bank, which stops it and asks you to confirm.

Our guide to why a card is declined online covers each decline message in detail.

How a ZikCards card works for international payments

ZikCards issues US Visa and Mastercard virtual cards to people and businesses in the US and almost every other country (see the restricted countries). The card is issued on a US credit BIN, loaded from your balance, with no credit line: it spends only what you put on it, with no bill and no interest.

  • Funding. You fund your ZikCards balance with USDT or USDC. USDT works on BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Solana, TRON or Ethereum; USDC on BNB Smart Chain, Polygon or Solana. See which network to send USDT on.
  • Cards. Choose Visa or Mastercard each time you create a card; the card is ready in seconds. Read Visa or Mastercard virtual card if you are unsure which to pick.
  • Billing address. Each card has its own US billing address on the card page, with a copy button. Use it at checkout: what billing address to use.
  • 3D Secure. When a check asks for a one-time code, it appears at the top of your ZikCards dashboard. More in our 3D Secure guide.
  • Phone wallets. A card can be added to Apple Pay or Google Pay to pay in shops abroad: how to add a virtual card.

What international payments cost on a ZikCards card

FeeAmount
Creating a card$5 one time ($3 for your first card with a $2-off discount code)
Loading money onto a card3%
Depositing USDT or USDCFrom $1 + 1%, depending on the network
Monthly card feeNone
Purchase that settles outside the US (card issuer's fee)$0.50 + 2.5%
Declined payment (card issuer's fee)$0.40, taken from the card

The cross-border fee depends on where the merchant's payment is settled, which is not always the country you link with the brand. A US software company that bills from the US carries no cross-border fee; a merchant that settles in Europe or Asia does. Your receipt often names the company that charged you.

A worked example. You pay a $50 monthly subscription to a merchant that settles outside the US. The fee is $0.50 + 2.5% of $50, which is $1.75, so the payment takes $51.75 from the card. $1.20 stays on every open card, so load at least $52.95. Every fee is on our pricing page.

How to set it up

  1. Create your account and verify once with a photo ID and a short selfie on your phone. Most verifications are approved automatically within minutes. See what ID you need.
  2. Fund your balance with USDT or USDC on the network you choose, and send on exactly that network.
  3. Create a card, Visa or Mastercard, and load the next payment plus $1.20 and any cross-border fee.
  4. Name the card on the My cards page after the merchant or what it pays for.
  5. Pay with the card number, expiry, security code and the card's own billing address.

One card per merchant

International payments are easier to manage when each merchant has its own card. Create one card for your hosting, one for an ad account, one for each subscription, and name them on the My cards page. A merchant that charges more than expected can only take what is on its card. If you stop using a service, freeze or close its card instead of hunting for the cancel button. Each card also gives you a clean list of payments for your records, which helps when you match receipts or explain an expense. Closing a card returns its remaining balance to your ZikCards account in full, with no fee.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Loading exactly the price. Add the $1.20 that stays on the card and any cross-border fee.
  • Typing your home address. Use the card's billing address.
  • Retrying a declined payment again and again. Each decline costs $0.40. Find the reason first.
  • Closing a card before a refund arrives. Refunds go back to the card that was charged.
  • Using a card for blocked purchases. Some categories are blocked on ZikCards cards today, such as gambling and crypto purchases: which purchases are blocked.
