You open X Ads, set up a campaign or try to promote a post, add a card, and see "Your payment method was declined". Or your ads stopped because a charge did not go through. This guide explains how X charges for ads, which payment methods you can use, where to add a card and find your billing history, why X ads payments fail and how to fix them, and how to pay for X (Twitter) ads with a virtual card.
How X charges for ads
X ads, still called Twitter ads by many people, are paid through an ad account in X Ads Manager at ads.x.com. Whether you run a full campaign or promote a single post from the X app, the spending is billed to the payment method on that ad account.
For most self-serve advertisers, X charges the card after the ads run. A charge is usually taken when your spending reaches a billing threshold, or at the end of a billing period, whichever comes first. New accounts often start with a low threshold that may rise as payments succeed. X sets these rules and can change them, so check your own account's billing section.
This matters for your card. A $20 daily budget does not mean a charge of $20 a day. It may mean one larger charge every few days. In some countries tax is added, so the amount taken can be higher than the threshold. Your card has to cover the whole charge at once.
Which payment methods you can use for X ads
The methods you see depend on your country and account. For most self-serve advertisers, X takes:
- Cards on networks such as Visa and Mastercard. This is the usual way to pay for X ads and promoted posts.
- Invoicing, for some larger accounts managed with X's sales team.
Where to add or change a card in X Ads
- Sign in at ads.x.com with the X account that owns the ad account.
- Check that you are in the right ad account, especially if you manage several.
- Open the billing area. It is usually in the account menu, under a name such as Payment methods or Billing. Menu names change from time to time.
- Choose to add a new payment method, select card, and enter the card number, expiry date, security code and cardholder name.
- Enter the billing address that belongs to the card, exactly as the card's issuer has it.
- Make the new card the primary payment method if you want X to charge it first.
When you add a card, X may place a small temporary authorisation on it to check that it works. It is not a charge, but the card usually needs money on it for the check to pass. The card's issuer may also run a 3D Secure check that may ask for a one-time code. Our 3D Secure guide explains how that works.
X ads billing: billing history, receipts and the billing entity
To see what X charged you ("Twitter billing"), open the billing area in X Ads Manager. It usually has a billing history or receipts view listing each charge, its date, card and amount, with receipts to download.
Two details are worth checking on a receipt:
- The billing company. Depending on where your business is, X may bill you through one of its companies outside the US. For your card, that can mean the purchase settles outside the US, which some issuers charge a fee for.
- Tax. In some countries tax is added to each charge, so the receipt shows a higher amount than your ad spend.
Why X ads payments are declined
- International or online payments are switched off. Many bank cards need them turned on in the banking app.
- The card's country. Cards issued in some countries are refused more often by online platforms, even with money on them.
- Billing address mismatch. The address you typed does not match the one the card's issuer holds.
- Not enough for the full charge. The card had enough for a day of ads, but not for the threshold charge plus any tax and fees.
- The temporary authorisation failed. The card was empty or nearly empty when you added it.
- Too many retries or card changes. Several failed attempts, or adding and removing cards again and again, can lead X to restrict the ad account's payments.
For decline messages in general, read why cards are declined online.
How to fix a failed X ads payment
- Find the reason first. Read the message in the billing area of X Ads, and check your bank or card app for the declined attempt and its reason.
- Fix the cause. Add money to the card, switch on online and international payments, or correct the billing address.
- Pay what you owe. When a charge fails, your ads usually pause until the outstanding balance is paid. Use the option in the billing area to retry the payment.
- Retry once. If it fails again, stop and look for the cause again rather than pressing pay repeatedly.
- If the ad account is restricted or suspended, follow X's own process. The account usually shows the reason and, where X allows it, a way to appeal. A new card does not change X's decision about a restricted account.
Paying for X ads with a virtual card
A virtual card is a Visa or Mastercard with a number, expiry date and security code, but no plastic. It keeps ad spend apart from your main bank account. See what is a virtual card, and our virtual card for ads guide for using one across several ad platforms.
A US card removes the most common reason cards from some countries are refused, the card's country, but X runs its own checks, so no card provider can promise acceptance. These habits keep payments running:
- One card per ad account or per client. One client's spend never touches another's, and every receipt matches one card.
- Keep the balance above the next charge. On a ZikCards card, $1.20 stays on the card while it is open, so what you can spend is the balance less $1.20.
- Use the card's own billing address, shown on the card page, not your home address: why the billing address matters.
- Allow for the cross-border fee. If X bills you through a company outside the US, the purchase settles outside the US and carries the card issuer's cross-border fee of $0.50 + 2.5%, taken from the card.
- Avoid declines. The issuer charges $0.40 for every declined payment, taken from the card, and X may retry a failed charge.
Here is how much to keep on a card for a $100 charge billed from outside the US:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| X ads charge | $100.00 |
| Cross-border fee ($0.50 + 2.5% of $100) | $3.00 |
| Stays on the card while it is open | $1.20 |
| Minimum balance on the card | $104.20 |
| Sensible load, with a margin for tax or a slightly larger charge | about $115 |
If X bills you from the US, leave out the cross-border fee, so the minimum is $101.20. Loading a card has its own fee, listed on the pricing page. To plan how much your ads need to earn, use the free break-even ROAS calculator.
How to set it up with ZikCards
- Sign up and verify once. Create an account at zikcards.com and verify with a photo ID (passport, national ID card or driving licence) and a short selfie on your phone. Most verifications are approved automatically within minutes. See what ID you need.
- Add money to your balance with USDT or USDC stablecoins. There are no bank or card deposits, and the deposit fee is from $1 + 1%, depending on the network. Always send on the network you chose: which network to use. New to stablecoins? Read how to buy USDT.
- Create a card for the ad account. Choose Visa or Mastercard and load the next charge plus the $1.20 and a margin. The card is ready in seconds. Name it after the client or ad account on the My cards page.
- Add it in X Ads with the card number, expiry, security code and the card's own billing address. If a check asks for a one-time code, it appears at the top of your ZikCards dashboard: where to find the code.
- Top up before the next charge. If you stop advertising, pause the campaigns in X before you freeze the card, because each declined charge on a frozen card still costs $0.40: freeze or close.
Running ads on other platforms too? The same habits work for Facebook ads, Google Ads and TikTok ads. A card changes how you pay, not where X offers advertising. Follow X's advertising policies.
Frequently asked questions
How do I pay for X (Twitter) ads?
Add a card in the billing area of X Ads Manager at ads.x.com. X usually charges it after your ads run, when your spending reaches the billing threshold or at the end of a billing period. Larger accounts managed with X's sales team may be offered invoicing instead.
Why does X say my payment method was declined when there is money on my card?
Common reasons are that the card had enough for a day of ads but not for the full charge, online or international payments are off, or the billing address does not match. The card's country can also be the reason. On a ZikCards card, $1.20 stays on the card while it is open, so you can spend the balance less $1.20. Check each reason, then retry once.
Where do I find my Twitter ads billing history and receipts?
In X Ads Manager, open the billing area from the account menu. The billing history lists each charge with its date, amount and card, and you can download receipts there.
Can I use a virtual card for X ads?
You add it in X Ads Manager like any other card. A US card removes the most common reason cards from some countries are refused, the card's country, but X runs its own checks, so no card provider can promise acceptance.
Does the card give me credit for ad spend?
No. A ZikCards card is issued on a US credit BIN, but no credit is given. It is loaded from your balance first and spends only what is on it, with no bill and no interest.
Ready to give your X ad budget its own card? Create your ZikCards account. See every fee on our pricing page.
