Google Ads Cost & Budget Calculator

Work out what Google Ads will cost and return: CPC to clicks, conversions and profit.

Search CPC varies far more by keyword than by account.

How this Google Ads cost calculator works

Search buys clicks, not impressions. That is the difference from a social budget: on Meta or TikTok you buy impressions at a CPM and a share of them get clicked; on Google search you are billed per click, so the chain starts one step further along and impressions never enter the arithmetic.

Budget ÷ cost per click (CPC) gives clicks. Clicks × conversion rate gives orders or leads. Orders × average order value gives revenue, of which you keep the gross margin. Ad spend comes out of that margin, not out of revenue, which is why the calculator also shows your break-even ROAS: the return on ad spend at which the campaign stops losing money.

A worked example

The default figures above are a small online shop: $150 a day for 30 days, a $1.80 cost per click, a 3.5% conversion rate, a $120 average order and a 45% gross margin.

  • Total spend: $150 × 30 = $4,500.
  • Clicks: $4,500 ÷ $1.80 = 2,500.
  • Orders: 2,500 × 3.5% = about 88.
  • Revenue: 87.5 × $120 = $10,500, a ROAS of 2.33x.
  • Gross profit: 45% of $10,500 = $4,725, so $225 is left after the ad spend.
  • Break-even ROAS: 1 ÷ 45% = 2.22x. At 2.33x this campaign is only just profitable; a CPC of $1.90 instead of $1.80 would tip it into a loss.

That last point is the useful one. A campaign close to break-even is not a failure, but it means the cost per click and the conversion rate deserve more attention than the budget.

How much does Google Ads cost?

There is no fixed price. You set the budget, and each click is priced in an auction against other advertisers bidding on the same search. What moves your cost per click:

  • The keyword. Competitive terms in insurance, legal or finance can cost many dollars a click; niche or local terms can cost cents.
  • The country you target. The same keyword usually costs far less in Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh or Egypt than in the US or UK, because fewer advertisers compete for it.
  • Quality Score. Google rewards ads and landing pages that match the search closely with a lower price for the same position.
  • Match type and timing. Broad match reaches more searches at a lower average relevance; bidding only at the hours your customers buy saves spend.

The honest way to get your own CPC is the Keyword Planner inside Google Ads, or a week of real spend. Put that figure into the calculator rather than a national average. Already know your spend and clicks? Work out your real CPC.

How to set your daily budget

Work backwards from the result you need. If you want 60 orders a month and each order costs about $50 to win, you need around $3,000 a month, which is roughly $100 a day. Then check the result here against your margin: a budget that hits its order target at a loss is not a plan.

Why the daily budget is a ceiling, not a promise: Google will not spend the full daily budget if there is not enough qualifying search volume, and on busy days it can spend up to twice the daily budget. Over a month it evens out: you are not charged more than the daily budget × 30.4 for the month. Treat the total here as the maximum, and check what actually spent before drawing conclusions.

Google Local Services Ads cost

Local Services Ads (the "Google Guaranteed" or "Google Screened" listings for plumbers, lawyers and other local services) are charged per lead, not per click. You can still use this calculator: enter your cost per lead in the cost-per-click field and the share of leads that become paying customers as the conversion rate.

Search intent flatters conversion rates

Someone searching for what you sell is much further along than someone scrolling past it, so conversion rates on search run well above social, and the CPC runs higher to match. Comparing the two channels on cost per click alone will always make search look expensive and always be the wrong conclusion. Check your conversion rate.

Paying for Google Ads from outside the US

Google bills your card automatically: when your spend reaches your billing threshold, or 30 days after the last charge, whichever comes first. If that charge is declined, ads stop until the balance is paid. Advertisers outside the US most often see declines because the card is not enabled for international or online payments, because the billing address entered does not match the card, or because the bank limits foreign charges. What each decline message means and how to fix it.

Common budgeting mistakes

  • Judging a campaign on ROAS without knowing your break-even ROAS. Find yours from your margin.
  • Spreading a small budget across many keywords, so none gets enough clicks to learn from.
  • Changing the budget every day. Big swings reset the bidding system; change it gradually.
  • Forgetting fees: payment and currency-conversion fees on your card are part of the real cost per order.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend on Google Ads per day?

Start from the result you need and work backwards: target orders per month × the cost of winning one order ÷ 30. Many small advertisers start with $10 to $50 a day to learn which keywords convert, then raise the budget on the ones that are profitable.

Is there a minimum budget for Google Ads?

Google has no fixed minimum. A budget so small that a campaign gets only a few clicks a day will, however, take a long time to show which keywords work.

How is the cost of Google Ads calculated?

On search you pay per click, at a price set in an auction against other advertisers. The price depends on the keyword, the country you target, your Quality Score and your bid strategy, and it is never more than your maximum bid.

Can Google spend more than my daily budget?

On a single day it can spend up to twice your average daily budget, but over a calendar month you are not charged more than your average daily budget × 30.4.

What is a good ROAS for Google Ads?

A good ROAS is any figure above your break-even ROAS, which is 1 ÷ your gross margin. With a 45% margin you need at least 2.22x; with 25% you need 4x.

Does this calculator work for Google Local Services Ads?

Yes. Local Services Ads charge per lead, so enter your cost per lead in the cost-per-click field and the share of leads that become customers as the conversion rate.
